Waning Democracy In Africa

 By Usman Paul Abdullahi U17MM1029

Barely forty years after Africa’s independence, some African countries have plunged into the well of autocracy in the place of democracy which they promised their citizens and even fought their colonial masters from.

Democracy in Africa is gradually becoming an abstract word and not the ultimate dream our political thinkers dreamt of.
It is no longer news that the coup in Niger is a threat to the remaining democratic nations in Africa. Even ECOWAS in all its glory could not intervene but were only issueing threats from afar like a fierce lion who could not defend its pride. Also the coup is becoming contagious as other African nations are joining in this perfidy.

Even so, countries like the world powers are looking at the overall gains of this coups and dispute among the Africa nations as Niger is among the top ten largest producers of Uranium according to World Nuclear Association 2021.

Invariably, imperialism is inevitable for this African nations if this political upheaval is not curtailed.
Below is a map showing colonist control of Africa prior to their independence.

ECOWAS needs to leave no stone unturned in this quest for democracy, peace and development in her states and other sister countries.
