EBIRA FESTIVAL CELEBRATIONS

The Ebira people cherishes their traditional festivals more than Gold. They have several annual cultural festivals. The most prominent festivals are "Echane”, "Eche-ori" and Ekuechi:
ECHE -ANE FESTIVAL (women festival) Eche-ane simply means women festivals before, now it was only during this period that ladies were given out for marriage. Eche-ane is mostly prioritized by the outing of masquerade (EKU) with their sticks to entertain people and receive gifts from guests. Usually the masquerade outing is based on clan.


EKUECHI
(Traditional Masquerade)
This is night masquerade usually carried out by matured men.women are not allowed to see this kind of masquerade because of Traditional ethics. Ekuechi marks the end of calendar year and the beginning of a new year. All dead relatives are believed to return to earth to visit, so women stay indoors to prepare "Apapa"(moi moi) and a he- goat meat for the visitors. Ekuechi is anchored on ancestral celebration and interaction, it entails celebration of myth, legends and traditional social events.It runs through December till early January with each community presenting their masquerade on their chosen date by priest of Ireba Eku(masquerade cult).Different traditional musicians known as "Ikede" sing good songs during the festival, people also show case their drumming skills. It is a night performance that involves drumming, chanting, dancing and singing loudly as supporters of these masquerade try to outwit one another.


Eche-ori is a new YAM festival celebrated only in (IHIMA and
EGANYI) traditional worshippers make sacrifice in the secret groove of ori
(deity) high up in the mountain to show gratitude for its protection and
provision of bounteous harvest.
During the festival, worshippers carry carves with which
they whip one another in turns without showing signs of pain.Female singers
also features delightful music "Echori"
It is only after this festivals that one can eat or sell new
years in the market it is a taboo to sell or even eat it before the festival in
IHIMA and EGANYI.
