The Truth About Botox Injections
By Hammidu Hanifat Ibrahim U17MM1093
Botox injections are shots administered in small doses by a certified doctor to a patient to temporarily paralyze the muscle in the area in which the injection has been administered. The injection contains botulinum toxin or botulinum neurotoxin which is a neurotoxin protein produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum species which are present in natural settings like soils, lakes, forests and intestinal tracts of mammals and fish.
Interestingly, the medicine contained in the shots consists of toxins that causes a type of food poisoning called botulism. When these shots are administered to the human body, they release toxins that prevents the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neurotransmitter suction which causes flaccid paralysis. The shots are often used to smooth wrinkles on the face and help treat a wide range of medical conditions.
Depending on the reason for injections and response of the patient, Botox injection can cause some side effects such as dry eye following cosmetic uses, numbness, mild pain, swelling or bruising around the injection site, temporary eyelid dropping, headaches, unwanted weakness or paralysis in nearby muscles among others.
