Borne out of curiosity, a vivid depiction of your imagination, carved out into reality, made up of varieties which will make that world comfortable; free from sorrow, hardship, poverty, insecurity etc – a world away from the current world. Thanks to technology for making imaginations come alive. Due to the advancement in technology, innovators have introduced the virtual reality. But how real is virtual reality? Virtual Reality (VR) is an environment generated by computer, containing scenes and objects that appear to be real, making the user feel they are involved in the surroundings. This reality is graphically designed and can be accessed and controlled using devices such as stereo headphones, head-mounted stereo television goggles, and data-gloves.
It is fascinating to know that virtual reality is gradually taking over the real world today. Since it’s invention in 1956 and it’s several modifcations years later, the virtual reality (VR) technology has proven to be effective and of immense help in various fields today such as education, entertainment, military, science etc. For instance, virtual reality has contributed in the success of several surgeries in the medical field, through the technology of telepresence i.e robotic devices which are remotely controlled through mediated sensory feedback to carry out a function. VR is also effective in treating mental health issues such as PTSD and anxiety, with the use of Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy.
More so, Virtual reality is also used in automotive industries to hold early design and engineering reviews to check the visual design of prototype cars before commissioning
Also, with the rise of metaverse, VR retail is becoming a possibility, where customers can shop and get the perfect fit of what is been ordered for, through body scanning technology, thereby enabling shoppers have a time effective experience.
However, according to a research by the International Data Corporation (IDC) research, VR market will reach 15.5 billion euros by 2022 and an increase of 78.5% over $10.5 billion, achieving a five-year annual growth rate (CAGR) of 77.0% to 2023, which means Virtual reality will be at the center of digital transformation and the spending of different companies and consumers will increase by an additional 80%, according to this report. In addition to technological development, the primary drivers for this growth will be the rapid growth of VR in tablets, computers, and smart phones and it will reach 161.1 billion in revenue by 2025.

With this report, I am curious, so I ask; “Is virtual reality really taking over the real world? “How long will it take before the existing reality will be extinguished?” “Is virtual reality the new reality?.
