"ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE DETERMINES YOUR RESULTS"
By: Hafiz Yusha'u, U18mm2008.
Students academic performance is measured based on their results. Poor academic performance is largely attributed to the lack of commitment and preparations in and outside the classrooms. Academic results are a yardstick for measuring a student's understanding and skill on a particular subject or course. As said by Dr Adama Adamu, the H.O.D of mass communication Department of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, exams and tests remain the powerful instruments via which students can be assessed.
Academically, results are a reflection of students' level of knowledge and understanding of the subject matter. They equally depict how well a student has had a better grasp of the concepts and principles imparted on them in classrooms. Obviously, high grades denote strong comprehension.

Reportedly, results are assessing how able students are in the application of their knowledge and skill in solving problems. This is apparent in the way they demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving, analytical skills as well as practical applications of theoretical concepts.
Moreover, there are several existing factors influencing academic performance which are encapsulated as students' preparations and readiness. Raging from effort and time investment, active learning, time management, and consistent revision. Developing these elements equitably would inevitably have a positive impact on students' results.
Also, academic results serve as a feedback for improvement and consolidation. They enable the students to identify their strengths and weaknesses. By subjecting their results to analysis, students can focus on areas that need improvement and further develop strategies to enhance their academic performance.
The Department of Mass Communication and many other departments within Ahmadu Bello University stick to the conventional way of result releasing by pasting them on boards in a public place for all the students to witness. This is also the act many of the students whom I interviewed despised as they hold the belief that results are everyone's confidential treasure. By extension, are not supposed to be made public. Therefore, students should be having their transcripts surreptitiously. However, in an interview with Dr. Kabiru Danladi, a lecturer from mass communication department of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, he shed more light on the issue where he said " it is a law to paste results in a public place as soon as they get approved by the Senate as they now become public property". He added that any department giving transcripts without having firstly paste the results is violating the law.
