ABU-BESS 22 Model To Improve Performance Of Building In Nigeria - ABU's Prof Mshelgaru

Professor Isa Hassan-Enua Mshelgaru of Building Department introduced a new invention that is tasked to improve the performance of building in Nigeria on Wednesday, 2nd August, 2023, during his Inaugural Lecture at Ahmadu Bello University Main Campus's Assembly Hall.


During his lecture on the topic 'Performance Of Building In The Nigerian Built Environment In The Midst Of Microorganisms: Realities, Challenges And Opportunities,' which studied how microorganisms hinders the good performance of building in Nigerian built environment, the university don introduced an innovation that will curtail the problems of buildings and improve their performance.

In an interview with Education Monitor Newspaper, shortly after presentation of the event, Professor Mshelgaru said, "the innovation is an environmental problem solver, and it will elevate the performance of buildings from ordinary and conventional to high performance, and it would be beneficial to everybody, to the economic sustainability and to other human activities across the country."

Professor Mshelgaru educated that there are several diseases caused by low performing buildings, but unfortunately, the hospitals we have today in Nigeria cannot diagnose them because the diseases only appear when a person is inside a low performing building, but immediately he leaves the building, the disease disappears, and it's very dangerous, as it reduces performance of people at work and at home, but people do not realize.

"The sicknesses are not identifiable in the laboratories, they can only be treated when someone is in the building, that is why they are called 'Sick-building Syndrome," he explained.

In his closing remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kabiru Bala said, it is hoped that the application of the model as explained by the researcher would go a long way in improving building performance and curtailing the sick building syndrome.
