Thousands are graduating from our tertiary institutions on a yearly basis and there aren't enough jobs to absorb these numbers, and even when such jobs exists, they are quickly taken by those who have connections. If the current hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy does not convince you, perhaps, recent government figures which shows that more than 130 million Nigerians are living in Multidimensional Poverty will strike a chord. And, for a graduate with little or no experience, finding where to start off can be extremely daunting.
So, what should you do?
Learn a skill
It is general knowledge that most courses in our tertiary institutions do not prepare graduates for the labor market due to lack of synergy between schools and industries. Reports has it that Dangote recently employed more than 11,000 Indians in his refinery at the expense of Nigerians. The immediate past minister of communication, Isa Pantami, also harped on the importance of skills.
Make the right connections and prepare your CV
Grow the right networks as this can keep you updated on recent job openings in the industry. Additionally, update your CV with the right information. Get real guarantors that can be contacted. You should create a LinkedIn account and follow professionals in your field.
Search for jobs and submit your CV everywhere
Submit your CV even in unsolicited places. This will boost your chances of snagging a job when you least expect it. And even if they don't contact you, what have got to loose?
Consider Agriculture
With recent hike in food prices and meat, agriculture has also become a veritable industry for those looking to be self sufficient. The Government through the Federal Ministry Of Agriculture And Rural Development, in connection with the Bank Of Agriculture has also put measures in palce to attract potential farmers.
Humble Beginnings.
Most graduates with no experience want to start at the top of the ladder where it takes ten years to climb to. This make them loose opportunities of building their career, and experience along the way.
In conclusion, getting a job by submitting countless CV can be an exhausting endeavour. Even for those who decides to go for masters to boost their chances, not having experience on the job can be your undoing.
