Significance of cornrows in African History.

Cornrows known as canerows also, has been a traditional African hairstyle that dates back thousands of year. Despite it's ancient origins, cornrow remains an important part of African cultural heritage and continue to be worn and celebrated today.


Cornrows were not only a way to style one's hair, it also had cultural significance,cornrow could signify a person's social status, age,and tribe affiliation in some cases. In some cultures, cornrows were also used as a form of communication, with different patterns and styles conveying specific messages, cornrow was also used as a symbol of resistance and a symbol of cultural pride.

Additionally, the skill of braiding was passed down from generations often serving as a bonding experience within families and communities especially among women. Even During slave trade, cornrows remained a popular hairstyle evolving to fit into different settings.
