All Work And No Play Makes Jack A Dull Boy - The Revival Of Social Activities On Campus

 By Adamu Fatima Fika, U17MM1005

It’s all been about academics, academics and academics since 20 when all forms of social activities were banned in the university due to some factors considered immoral by the school management. The Vice Chancellor Professor Kabiru Bala had directed all forms of social activities to be cancelled and this made quite a lot of students sad.

Every Second Semester was the semester most students anticipated all around the campus because of the various social activities taking place. With the heat of academic, one week out of the semester is taken and the “departmental week” takes place usually after classes in the evening where various activities from cooking and dancing competitions, Debates and cultural displays take place.

The statement “All work and no play makes jack a dull boy” isn’t just said for the sake of it. Of course academics is the first priority, it’s the first reason every student is within the walls of Ahmadu Bello University.  The brain needs a break, even our electronic machines and robots need breaks. Taking a few hours to socialize with so many people and understand people more is an opportunity that should be grabbed onto as soon as it comes.

Of course, the school management has to be in control regulating and checking the activities of the students to ensure nothing tarnishing the reputation of the school is going on during the social activities. This could be done easily by making all students association of each department partaking in the “week” sign an undertaking and security personnel be provided during the week.

After years of no any form of social activity on campus, The Student Representative council (SRC) is finally hosting a Grand cultural carnival which aims at promoting cultural unity and display of various cultures from all over the country.  This Carnival was approved by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kabiru Bala and the entire students are overjoyed in expectation of the event which would be from 17th -19th of August 2023.

It is in anticipation that all students will be out in beautiful, colorful cultural attires and paint ABU with the beauty in unity. This single Cultural carnival might just be the first step in reviving the social life of Ahmadu Bello University. For more information and regular updates, Kindly follow @abucarnival23 on twitter.
